Alaska Seminary

Alaska Ministry Needs Your Help

Believe it or not, summer is just around the corner. As the pollen and temperature rises hearts turn to Alaska. The Bible seminary in Bethel, AK, run by the Moravian Church, is in need of siding and insulating. By using an insulated siding we think it will take less work and will save a lot of money and energy in the coming years. There are  three things you can help with, which I ask you to seriously consider.

First and most important is prayer. Pray for safety, for people to help and for financial support.  Second is workers – think about whether you might be one of those people being called to go. If you can not go, please consider helping someone else who would go if they could afford it. Third is financial support – funds are needed to purchase insulated siding plus 6 tables and 30 chairs for the seminary. Think about donating a chair @$30/chair or a table @$100/table. Contributions can be made to the Little Church on the Lane and designated for Alaska ministry. Mail to Little Church On The Lane, 522 Moravian Ln, Charlotte, NC 28207.

Thank you for your continued prayerful support of our brothers and sisters in Alaska.

Graduation

Weekday School News – Graduation May 16

Thank you for inviting the Weekday School families to the special children’s service in April. A good crowd came ready to worship, sing and enjoy good fellowship. Our little ones had fun performing a few of their Chapel songs for the congregation. Our hope is that this becomes an annual event!
The school year is quickly coming to a close. We will have a graduation ceremony on May 16 at 10:30am. There are 39 children moving on to “big” school this fall. We wish them many blessings for a successful kindergarten year.
The weekday school has a few openings for children ages 1 – 5. Anyone interested in registering should call Wendy Bezek (704-377-8453). The program runs September-May.
Our school also has positions available for teacher assistants in the fall. Please call Wendy Bezek, if you or someone you know is interested.
As usual, we are so thankful that the church allows us to spread God’s love to children
throughout the year! Happy Summer!!

Sermon – Going To Worship – Rev. Steve Wilson

Worship our Lord and Savior in spirit and in truth. Present your total self to God in worship. Be in His presence. Bring your spirit and give it to God. Jesus wants us to be filled by Him and worship with Him. Are you allowing God to flow through you in worship? Are you making yourself available in worship to see what the Holy Spirit has for you?

Second Generation Montagnards to Meet at LCOL

God has a way of opening eyes to see Him move with great power. I believe He has provided the church family of Little Church on the Lane with a way to see Him grow His church. Beginning Easter Sunday, a group of second generation Montagnards will begin to use our Chapel and classrooms to grow disciples for Jesus Christ.

Pastor Simon and a group he has been teaching will come from Greensboro and hold classes and worship each Sunday beginning at 4:00 p.m. Then during the week they will gather in the Fellowship Hall for mid-week classes. They needed a place to meet and desired to have a connection with a church family. God placed them with us and the Board decided to honor the request with a warm welcome. Thus, you are welcome to come and worship with this new church.

The Montagnards came from Vietnam and were instrumental in helping our troops in a difficult war. Many had to leave their country for fear of being killed. Being strong in their Christian faith, they came to work, establish and build a new life. Their children learned English while the first generation remained with the old language within the church. The second generation now wants to learn more about God using English. Little Church on the Lane is now part of their desire to know Christ!

Handbells (1024x768)

Handbell Choir

These beautiful bells need hands to play them!  Silently they rest, but they need you!

Handbells are a fabulous way to express praise to God and share acts of kindness and the joy of the Lord.  There is no more beautiful way to accomplish something as a vibrant, cooperative team.

If you have an interest . . .

If you can read music or if you are willing to learn

If you have musical talent, or wish you had the opportunity

If you are willing to help others learn

There is no age limit, no skill level required.  We will help each other play to the glory of God!

Because being a member of a handbell choir takes serious commitment, we plan to keep our goals reasonable, to accomplish some performances at Easter and Christmas.  We will start with simple but beautiful pieces.  If we have interested players who desire special guidance, I will be glad to help you.  Handbell playing is the single most rewarding musical experience to me, and you will not regret joining this group!

Please call the church office if you are interested in joining this group. Practice sessions will begin soon.

Alaska Seminary Fund Raiser Luncheon

DATE: March 3, 2013        TIME: 12:15pm

You are invited to a fund raiser lunch at Little Church On the Lane in the Fellowship Hall after Worship Service. Funds are being raised to purchase supplies for renovating Alaska Seminary in Bethel.

Menu: Homemade Moravian Chicken Pie, Moravian Slaw, Green Beans, Roll, and Beverage.

Bake Sale: Cakes, Pies, Cookies

Cost of the meal is a donation to help with purchase of supplies: Siding, Paint, Tables, Chairs, Mattresses.

Moravian missionaries began training “church helpers” in 1891 then in 1947 they built a seminary to serve as the educational arm of the Alaskan Moravian Church. Many Southern Province Moravians, including Little Church members have gone to Bethel Alaska over the years to help build and repair buildings in Bethel.

Last summer the seminary was reopened after having been closed for several years. Several work teams went to Bethel where they built a home for the pastor and did some painting and cleaning at the seminary. This summer, we hope to have as many as three teams going to Bethel to work on the seminary and the Dean’s house.

An Update on Children’s Ministries — 02.01.2013

How exciting to meet such amazing parents at our home over the past couple of weeks! Together, we discussed how the children’s ministry at Little Church could work to support families by providing a place for the youngest members to grow in the Lord. Some of the main ideas that came forth in general terms were the desire for family fellowship, Sunday school teaching that is focused on God’s Word and the memorization of Scripture, and opportunities for the children to participate in the service and other aspects of congregational life as part of the church family.  We are working toward the first of these mandates by combining efforts with Jane McCreedy and the Fellowship Committee. As we continue to fellowship together, we look forward to building strong relationships and encouraging our youngest members on their journey to know and love our Lord Jesus Christ. I am excited by the love and devotion that the families at LCOL have toward their children. Our prayer is that together God will use us all to accomplish His purposes.

Giving Thanks by Giving and Doing

A Happy Response to the Love of God

Bitter people often withhold thanks. It seems as if
their anger at their circumstances cannot stand if gratitude
breaks through. They often demand with no thought
given to common courtesy to family and to strangers. For
some reason, it feels good to hold onto past grievances
and damaged memories rather than embrace a new day
and opportunity.
The witness of God’s love is such a contrast.
Grateful people are eager to give praise and offer words
of thanksgiving. Their joy is so full that gratitude has
taken over their psyche. They often demand to be served
last, to pay the bill, to stand rather than to sit, and to defer
their own well being to that of another. They embrace a
new day as a gift to take care of and serve God’s people.
This witness takes over one’s life. Caring for the
“least of these” dominates conversation and thought.
Opportunities present themselves repeatedly to serve in
God’s way and in His time. God presents the
opportunities and reveals circumstances. The love of God
in man responds.
It is up to each individual to evaluate the way they
respond to God. God loves a cheerful giver of any
means. He does not withhold thanks but lavishes
abundant love on those who serve His people. God does
understand bitterness and anger, raw emotion. He seeks
to soothe and comfort us to let go of past grievances and
damage. He seeks to heal and provide joy, real and
lasting.
Do you respond with bitter words and sharp wit or
grateful obedience and an attitude of service and
humility? God has given us guidance to make our choice.
How do you respond?

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger,
brawling and slander, along with every
form of malice. Be kind and compassionate
to one another, forgiving each other, just as
in Christ God forgave you.
— Ephesians 4:31-32

Sermon: God’s Method – It Isn’t What I Thought

Ephesians 4:11-13 & Romans 5:5

God tells us about loving one another before he tells us about the Holy Spirit. We will experience God’s love when we serve others.

Are you ready to stop missing out on experiencing God’s qualities of humility, love, patience and kindness?

Absolute surrender to Christ allows the Holy Spirit to work through you and have fullness of maturity in Jesus Christ.

Sermon – Peace Found Now, Not Later

How can we celebrate Christmas in a world of sin and tragedy? God works for the good to keep us in relationship with him. Put to death the old nature and live in the new nature led by Christ. Let go of your way and live the God way. Romans 8:9-11, 1-14, 15-17, 26-27, 28, Luke 2:11-14, Matt 11:28-30

Stewardship — The Idolatry of the Dollar Bill

The Informed Age
Big Idea: Tithing
Question:  Why do so many Christians make the choice not to tithe?
The Idolatry of the Dollar Bill
The Old Testament talks about idolatry and its disastrous effect on man’s relationship with God.  It is a sin to worship, to give time, thought, deeds and money to objects, images, people, concepts or whatever one chooses to put on a pedestal and give godlike respect.  The Israelites are called out time and time again for this sin.  It is a definite means to ruin, separation from God.
As part of a sophisticated culture, Christians do recognize idol status and many take care to examine their lives and minds for where idolatry may gain a foothold.  Many examine the emphasis placed on status, appearance, career advancement, degrees, possessions and many others.
What happens to the dollar bill? Is the money in the bank or in the wallet seen as an idol?  As a society, a great deal of our security comes from the fact that there is a check coming that will pay the bills.  Most people can tell you the day the check will be deposited or shows up in the mail and the amount.  We pay close attention to those details because trouble may follow if the money doesn’t arrive.  We give grave importance to our money and protecting it.  We give it godlike respect.
When asked if money is an idol, people will look down and shuffle their feet.  No one wants to admit that money is indeed an idol.  The idea of giving part of that idol back to God is difficult to consider, possibly inconceivable.  Certainly, without a relationship with God, a person would never be moved to tithe.   Tithing is a unique discipline designed so that a believer is continually worshiping and giving thanks to God for His great gifts to that person whether it is time, talent or treasure.
The choice not to tithe prevents the believer from seeing God’s provision for obedience and the magnificent way God weaves resources together.  Tithing builds trust.  The tithing Christian is an eyewitness to God’s ability to grow something out of nothing and to provide the amount needed at just the right time.
Pray for the idol of money to be knocked down in the Christian mind.  Allow God to be worshipped by giving back to His church as the ancient believers did.  God remains faithful today as in ancient times.  He does not change.
Great is thou faithfulness, O God My Father, morning by morning new mercies I see………

Thoughts and Reflections from Pastor Steve

On Sunday, September 30 as part of our worship, we will join in a Missions and Ministry Fair. It is a time to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Many of our church family are unaware of the learning opportunities available, life groups and ways to serve within Little Church. Many are unaware of our teachers and those who help lead Little Church. On this date in the Fellowship Hall, you can meet and greet each other. There will be refreshments and time to learn more about our church family. More information will be sent to you about this special Sunday. Save the date of September 30.

The Adult Sunday School teachers met together and were able to share with each other ideas and desires for our Christian Education on Sunday morning. Though there are many classes meeting on Sunday morning, all agreed that the main focus is to be hearing the scriptures each Sunday and grasping how they are to be part of our everyday life. Each class has its own style of gathering but the Word is the foundation.

Also part of the meeting was the presensation of our e3. All agreed that we are at different places of learning and each person needs to be in a class which meets the phase or level of knowledge leading to growth. Many agreed that we assume we know more than we really do know. Thus there is a need to offer a variety of classes on different levels of knowledge. Each person is encouraged to take a step to grow in knowledge in order to grow in faith.

To conclude, all agreed that the congregation needs the freedom to move from class to class to help the individual and congregation meet our faith needs. It is unhealthy to be rigid as individuals and a church family. The next time you see your Sunday School teacher, give a big thanks for their dedication and willingness to serve.

Pastor Steve

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news,
who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings…

Stewardship – 07.20.2012

Give the Man His Money

Sometimes,  we just have to be told what to do.  This is a true story from Lester.

Lester and his wife chose to follow Jesus several years ago.  Lester had desired a church fellowship for quite awhile and was thrilled when he found Holly’s heart was on the same path.  They became a strong family.  Along that path, the family acquired additional medical expenses as the children experienced some special circumstances.

Lester’s family had been regular in church attendance. After a Sunday service, the minister asked Lester if he had considered tithing.  Lester said the usual things; money was always tight and he could not conceive of pulling money out of the budget to tithe.  The minister said simply, “give God his money.”  Following that instruction, Lester and his family began to tithe.  They allowed God to be faithful to them by providing for them.  They stopped withholding God’s gifts which allowed God to prove He is all that He claims!

Sometimes, we just have to be told what to do.

We are not withholding our affection from you,
but you are withholding yours from
us.  As a fair exchange-I speak as to my
children-open wide your hearts also.
2 Corinthians 6:12-12

Stewardship — Cheerful Givers — 06.2012

Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.  — 2 Corinthians 9:7

The concept of a cheerful giver can be different for every individual.  From the outside, it might connote a smiling face, a jovial personality, an open checkbook and a hearty handshake. From the inside, a cheerful giver can be found in a new believer in Christ or a mature Christian brimming over with thanksgiving and obedience.
We do know from the words of Paul that God loves a cheerful giver.  God must recognize the inner most workings of the giver.  He sees the journey from the stingy beginnings of stewardship to the full-fledged joy that comes when a Christian reaches the rich understanding of God’s provision for his children.
The decisions of the heart are accomplished through prayer, reading and hearing God’s Word, and counsel from the Holy Spirit.  Through all of these, a giver gains confidence, not reluctance.  The confidence comes from the power of knowing God’s holy character.  The burdens of compulsion, guilt and heavy-handed laws, are erased.  The decision of the heart is true, unburdened, and in step with God’s will.  It leaves the giver at peace with a cheerful heart in love with God.
Be of good cheer, God is always near!

S.O.L.E. Sunday — 05.20.2012

There is a ministry team called S.O.L.E. (Serving Our Lord Everyday). They have met to establish a purpose and vision                           for this ministry at LCOL. At this time, the purpose is to provide information about present ministries being done by members of Little Church on the Lane. Members may find they want to join others who are active in a ministry. This team will also encourage, equip and empower members to serve our Lord by serving others in the community.

S.O.L.E. Sunday for 2012 will take place THIS SUNDAY on May 20. This is a time when the church family serves others. The morning will be in service as each person can pick a place to give of themselves in some way. We will gather at 9:00 a.m. at the church to go out to our task

On May 20, our normal worship service at 11:00 a.m. will not take place within our sanctuary. Instead our worship for that day will be in serving others outside of the walls of Little Church on the Lane. Also, there will be no Sunday School that day.

We will be sharing our stories (like the disciples did when Jesus sent them out!) at our worship service on Sunday, May 27. You don’t want to miss this service and the stories people have to share.

Stewardship — April 2012

Giving up as a discipline for Lent
Giving up and giving back as a gift to God

We are completing another season of Lent. Once again, many have replaced temporal pleasures for a season to draw closer to God.  As God gave up His son, Jesus, for a universe of sin, many make small sacrifices to change their lifestyle for forty days.
Consider giving up a luxury for a longer period.  Consider donating that time, money or skill to a different purpose, something to serve God. It seems pretty easy to remove something from our lives for a matter of days.  It is more of a challenge to give up and give to God those resources for a longer time, maybe for always.
Increasing stewardship to God is made of decisions and steps.  Deciding to eliminate a treat, an activity, or a feel-good luxury is a conscious activity. Using the resources to increase giving to God increases stewardship in an intentional way. It strengthens the connection between man and God. Each step brings more awareness of God and God’s ability to provide for his beloved. Our faithfulness to God becomes deep and rich.  God’s faithfulness to us becomes evident and endless.

The LORD’S loving kindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. — Lamentations 3:22-23

Thoughts and Reflections from the Pastor — April 2012

Scripture can be so calming at times.  It can bring messages of love and care. However, it eventually presents the areas which can stir the thoughts which we don’t want to hear. The words of Jesus about being a disciple are not easy to hear. In Luke 6:46-49, Jesus gives us some of his thoughts in a way which is hard to avoid. He says why do you call me Lord when you don’t do what I say. Then He tells us why that isn’t too smart. Then in the same way He tells us in Matthew 7:21 that many will see themselves with a ticket to heaven but will be very disappointed. They, too, were ones who only throught themselves following what Jesus asked and yet never actually did anything.

As I conclude my series on Discipleship, the words Jesus spoke jump off the page. In Matthew 28, we are to make disciples teaching others to obey His commands. How can we do this if we aren’t able to take action ourselves? Maybe we are just thinking we are following Him and our lack of action says we aren’t sure about discipleship.

Being a disciple of Jesus means relying on Him to meet life’s expectations . We won’t be able to do it on our own. Jesus knows this. Thus our relationship with Him will either open the door towards being a disciple or we won’t know Him and He won’t know us. So what kind of relationship do you have with Jesus? The following questions might help you see what actions are part of your relationship. I hope you will see that there are no questions to be answered with a yes or no. Determine for yourself what your relationship looks like with Jesus. Make some changes if you need to. We at Little Church on the Lane can help each other grow as disciples. The church God has given us depends on it. Our own lives depend on it.

Word:                          How much time is spent reading the living scriptures of God?
Worship:                    What priority do you give to the worship God deserves?
Fellowship:               What ways are you sharing yourself with others in the church family?
Prayer:                        How are your conversations with God?
Service:                       What is your ministry being offered to God?
Sharing
Your Faith:            How is your life and actions a testimony of your belief in Jesus?
Finance:                      Who is guarding your finances?

Pastor Steve

Your Stephen Ministry at Little Church — 03.13.2012

Your Stephen Ministry at Little Church

In his book Soul Custody, Steven W. Smith tells of a time in his life when his son was stationed in Iraq. He found himself consumed with worry and extols the blessing of a friend who allowed him the freedom to share his fears and truly listened. Smith writes, “When we listen to each other, we offer a safe place where the one who speaks will be accepted-not judged, but loved. Not rejected or tolerated, but welcomed. When we find these kinds of ears to listen to us, we will find stress melting and flowing out of us. The simple act of listening to a person talk it out is sometimes that greatest yet simplest way of loving someone.”

This is the essence of a Stephen Minister.

If you would like to have a Stephen Minister please contact Pastor Steve at (704) 334-1381 or Stephen Leader Holly Jarrett (704)779-7256.

Making a Difference
If you were able to attend Mohamed’s ordination or the return-to-the village luncheon, you saw excitement and fulfillment.  Mohamed became a Moravian mission minister after a long process and service to God, church and country.  Mohamed and Safie, once again, said good byes to family and friends as they prepared to return to Sierra Leone.
Due to the financial support of the church family at Little Church and other church families, the mission continues in Sierra Leone.  Lives are changed in the village.  Children live today that would have died without a Christian presence in the village.  Young girls are able to grow through their teenage years with their families rather than being schooled unsupervised in villages a day away on foot.  Muslim children attend a Christian school and receive a picture of the love of Jesus for everyone through the leadership of teachers and Mohamed and Safie.  The need for buildings continues because the student population keeps growing older while the younger grades remain full. God’s work in the village makes a huge impact on individual lives.  The work of the church and school in Sierra Leone encourages the people of the village.  Parents have hope for the future.  Children learn in their own village with the support of their relatives.  They can see their future changing.   If the church, mission house and school were no longer there, that hope would die.
Stewardship literature says to show a connection between giving to God and the impact on individual lives through ministry.  No one that attended the ordination or the luncheon can doubt that God has blessed Little Church and the mission in Sierra Leone equally.  Lives in both locations have been impacted in life changing ways.  The way God has used the resources at Little Church to help build a school and sister church across the ocean is indeed a masterful work.
This is the connection.  Through giving to God, God’s work can be accomplished and God receives glory.  That is the best reason for giving generously.

The Ordination of a Deacon — 03.13.2012

A number of people have asked about Mohamed’s ordination.

Mohamed Braima was ordained a deacon with the Moravian Church on February 12.

In the Moravian Church, a deacon is given all the rights of a pastor. A call of service must be offered by the church to be ordained. After a number of years of successful service, a deacon is given permission by the P.E.C. to be consecrated a Presbyter. It is from the list of Presbyters that a person is elected to be a Bishop.

We congratulate Mohamed for his work towards ordination and pray for his work in his call to Sierra Leone!

Acts 2:42 — 03.13.2012

The Board of Little Church on the Lane wants everyone at LCOL to get sticky. If you aren’t sticky, it is time to get sticky. It is biblical and vital. Another name for sticky is to be in fellowship with others. This is from Acts 2:42.

Our life in the church calls for each person to connect with others. One of the best places is in a small group where lives can be shared. We need each other to encourage, support, and pray for one another. Otherwise we are pew potatoes who come for an hour and never realize the love of others.

If you are not active in a Sunday School class, Life Group, study group or ministry group, please tell us so that a group can begin for you to be sticky with others.

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
— Acts 2:42

Sermon – Growing As A Disciple: Sharing Our Faith

Let go of the world and transform your mind to God. Step away from the world and step to Christ. It is up to you and me to spread the word wherever we go. Are you willing to give up the stuff around you and renew your mind and receive our Lord in the way he wants us to be received? 1 John 2:15-17, Romans 12:1-2, Acts 1:7-8

Breakfast Calendar for 2012 — 12.13.2011

Our 9:00 a.m. breakfast each Sunday is an important part of our morning together. It is hoped classes, groups, and individuals will help to prepare these breakfasts. Please be thinking of the date(s) you would like to volunteer to do breakfast in the coming year. The calendar will be available in the Fellowship Hall walkway  by December 4 for you to sign up to volunteer.

The church will reimburse you for the breakfast items you purchase or you may donate them as part of your stewardship. The church furnishes milk, juice, butter, jelly, and cereal weekly.

This is a wonderful way to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ. It is extremely rewarding to the congregation, to our visiting guests, and to you. Everyone is very thankful for these breakfasts prepared by you!

Would You Like to Help Your Community — 12.13.2011

You can do that by donating to Crisis Assistance Ministry by providing gloves, scarves, and hats for adults and children.

Gospel Lesson — 10.02.2011

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

“If you love me, keep my commands.  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.  Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.  On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.  Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”

Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.  Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

“All this I have spoken while still with you.  But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

“You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.  I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.  I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me,  but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.

“Come now; let us leave.

— John 14:15-31

Join 2Together Today

We have begun sign ups for the 2together program. This comes from Acts 2:42 where we are to be in fellowship with others in the church. This means allowing ourselves to share our lives with others.

Everyone is encouraged to be part of 2together. This allows someone of the same sex in the church family to be paired with another person of the church family. (We encourage you to be paired with someone you don’t know well. If you have someone in mind, you can indicate your preference. Otherwise you will be paired with someone with similar circumstances.) A relationship can be found where you share prayer concerns, thoughts, ideas, and encouragement during the week. It is 2 people being the church together. Just give your name and the best way to be contacted. The thought is to then change the pairings after a period of time.

If you wish to participate you can email or the office to place your name on the list. You can also sign up on Sundays.

New Sunday School Class — 09.14.2011

New Sunday School Class

A new Sunday School class began on September 11. This class will focus on the basics of the Christian faith. Many of our members have asked to have some good teaching on what the Christian beliefs mean. Gene Kimel will lead the class using a study book for everyone to read. He will also incorporate some of the spiritual disciplines to help the teaching. The class will meet on the second floor of the church office. If you are interested, please call the office. You can just show up and experience this new class!

Monthly Women’s Bible Study — 09.14.2011

You are invited to participate in the monthly women’s Bible Study that began  on Tuesday, September 13, at 10:30am in the Fellowship Hall. This life group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, September – May in the Fellowship Hall. We will continue the study of the Fruit of the Spirit, led by Barbara Garwood, thru December. In January we will begin a new study entitled, Adventures in Faith with Paul by Rev. Edwin Sawyer and revised by Rev. Robert Sawyer. This book deals with Paul’s letter to Romans. From a Christian viewpoint many would classify Romans as the greatest of Paul’s epistles and is considered by many as the greatest book in the New Testament. The love of Paul for Jesus Christ and the theme of God’s grace are evident throughout this Bible Study. In the Sawyers’ examination of Romans we will find the ingredients for spiritual renewal. Again and again God speaks to us at the level of our deepest need through the Bible’s message.

Bring a sandwich, or whatever you would like to eat, and join us for a light lunch and fellowship after the Bible Study. We will provide the beverage and desert.

For questions or additional information, please contact Johnsie Barefoot (704.366.4027), Carolyn Gaylord (704.366.9342), or Barbara Garwood (704.521.8461).

Children’s Ministry Team — 09.14.2011

The Children’s Ministry Team has met and is preparing for activities to help grow our children. A new Sunday School class for kindergarten children will begin in September. As we approach the Christmas holidays, we will form a choir program for the kids. There will also be a fall festival during the Halloween season. These are just a few of the program plans to be completed. It will be important for parents to make the children’s program a priority for their household. This allows for kids to hear and know the Church and the life of Jesus.

Wednesday Night Program — 09.14.2011

The Wednesday night Bible study will resume on September 7 from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. A nursery can be made available if you have children and wish to attend. The study is the continuation of Matthew. This is a good time to begin even if you have not come before. We will begin at Chapter 17.  Just bring your Bible and learn more of how Matthew saw the Son of God. The meeting place is The Alma Owen Room which is on the first floor. Please let the office know if you plan to attend and need the nursery.

Candletrim — 09.14.2011

Can you believe it’s almost time again for Candletrim? It’s unbelievable that a year has almost zoomed by! The dates for Candletrim are:

October 6, 13, 20 and 27, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. We will begin with a light supper then start trimming!

Come join the fun and fellowship of this special Moravian tradition!

An Opportunity to Serve — 09.14.2011

If you are a talented seamstress, there is a need to both clean and repair robes used by Acolytes a Little Church. The robes are located in the Sacristy, to the right of the Altar. If this task is for you, please let either Stuart Caudill (scaudil5@carolina.rr.com) or Jean Whipple (704-376-1564) know. Thank you in advance!

S.O.L.E. — 9.14.2011

There is a ministry team called S.O.L.E. (Serving Our Lord Every day). They have met to establish a purpose and vision  for this ministy at LCOL. At this time, the purpose is to provide information about present ministries being done by members of Little Church on the Lane. Members may find they want to join others who are active in a ministry. This team will also encourage, equip and empower members to serve our Lord by serving others in the community. You will see this group sharing challenges and thoughts during worship on how to serve out of our faith.  You are asked to give your attention to their work as it strengthens our members and Little Church on the Lane.

September Prayer Focus — 09.14.2011

God Keeps Covenant

Do you have a heart for the Jewish people and their homeland, Israel? Has God impressed you to pray for them daily? If so, I would like to invite you to join with others of like mind to pray for God’s people, especially during the month of September. We will be using a simple 30-day devotional booklet entitled, God Keeps Covenant, a small study on God’s love for Israel. This study is based upon scriptures from the Old and New Testaments that refer to God’s plan and promises to the Jewish people and His word to Christian believers.

Then on Sunday mornings in September we will meet together between 8:30 and 9:00 in the Alma Owen Classroom. We will share any personal reflections on the devotional material and then pray for Israel.

The books have to be ordered so please let me know right away if you are interested in participating or you may call the church office.

Please let us know if you plan to attend or just show up.

A biscuit and coffee will be available.

Stewardship — 09.14.2011

A member of a church stated, “they don’t bother us about money, you can put money in the basket on the way out if you want.”  That church did not have a designated offering time.  The impression was of no pressure to assume financial responsibility to the church or return to God the tithe as a matter of obedience and thanksgiving.  It seemed rather sad that tithes, offerings and gifts to God were not a part of the worship service.
We experience the joy of giving in all kinds of ways in our present culture.  The popular term “giving back” is used all the time.  The term urges people to give a response for their success, good fortune, or wellbeing by participating in charities and philanthropic causes.  Churches for centuries have asked believers to give back to God.  It is ironic that popular culture has coined that phrase and prompted many to action.
The joy of giving God his tithe is one of the gifts of being obedient.  It feels good to invest in God’s house and people.  Tithing is an amen to all that God has and will provide.   The opportunity to tithe is always present.  It happens one person at a time.  The Holy Spirit leads the way and prompts us to action.  The strength of the relationship with our living God grows remarkably as we grow in obedience and trusting God rather than our own understanding.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
— Proverbs 3:4-5  NIV

One Heart and Mind (2Together) — 09.14.2011

It is so easy to get lost in the shuffle when a church is busy. We assume others are knowing what is happening and how to speak the language of “church.” We can start to believe that everyone but ourselves has the answer and then we start to lose sight of ourselves as part of the church. Well, no one has it all together and everyone can be connected and joined in some way.

Acts 4:32 says that “All the believers were one in heart and mind.” Little Church on the Lane can be joined with one heart and mind. The way this starts is to be joined one at a time. Thus we need a way to start to be connected and supportive of each other.

I want to offer a new experience called “2together.” It is providing each person in the church a way to encourage and support someone else. It is pairing a male to a male and a female to a female. Calls can be made during the week to see how life is going. Prayer concerns can be shared plus questions asked as to how to handle particular situations. Joys and sorrows can be shared. We begin to grow as we help each other.

I ask that you consider being part of “2together.” A sign up will begin in September. Look for it and help grow Little Church on the Lane and someone else. Be connected with others with one heart and mind.
Pastor Steve
